Tech events spell an exciting time for companies and consumers, as both chart a course together for the future of the organization and the services it aims to provide. While the Copilot AI was an obvious central talking point for the company, safety and security also emerged as a key focus of Microsoft Ignite 2024. Conducted on November 19, the buzz around the event took on a more somber note considering the Crowdstrike failure that occurred earlier this year.

Emphasizing the importance of staying protected from all kinds of digital threats in the modern world, Microsoft Ignite 2024 highlighted security in a very detailed manner. The company announced the Windows Resiliency Initiative to help for a faster recovery cycle in case of another incident, as well as other updates to the security system at Microsoft.

Security Takes Center Stage at Microsoft Ignite 2024

Microsoft has been struggling with the Copilot branding like a teenager trying to settle on the perfect gamertag for the rest of their gaming career, however, this remains a minor concern compared to the other challenges faced by the business.

The Crowdstrike incident back in July affected over 8.5 million Windows PCs and servers, decimating a huge chunk of the confidence that users had in the Microsoft brand. Before we get into talking about its “cutting-edge AI tools” and the wonders of the Copilot+ PCs, it is essential for users to understand the security investments being embraced by Microsoft.

One of Ignite 2024’s primary device security features is the Windows Resiliency Initiative which aims to bring core changes to the system to make it easier to recover Windows machines in case of another Crowdstrike-esque incident.

It focuses on four main areas: strengthening the system based on learnings from the incident, allowing a larger number of apps and users to run without admin permission, improving the controls for the apps that are allowed to run, and delving into identity protection in order to prevent phishing attacks.

The security update at Microsoft Ignite 2024 also mentions a “Quick Machine Recovery” feature that will allow IT administrators to conduct targeted fixes remotely from the Windows updates, even if the machine is incapable of booting up. Alas, this capability is a while away as it will become available to the Windows Insider Program community only in 2025.

Microsoft Discusses Raising the Bar on Security

In addition to the recovery precautions on Windows, Microsoft recently held a summit with its Microsoft Virus Initiative (MVI) partners to discuss what they can do to enhance security. From additional testing to improved incident processes to safe deployment practices, the Redmond-based tech giant explained its attempt to encourage partners to ensure the best practices in all things security.

“With Windows 11, we’ve achieved a remarkable 3x reported reduction in firmware attacks and 2.9x fewer instances of credential theft compared to Windows 10.”

Microsoft also discussed hardware security, bringing up the TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot features in Windows 11 PCs for defense against sophisticated attacks. Copilot+ PCs have a built-in Microsoft Pluton security processor, for ensuring protection at the core of the device.

Giving Users Greater Control and Simplifying Device and Data Protection

We then have the Smart App Control and App Control for Business policies which are designed to help regulate what apps run on your device. These give IT admins a greater amount of control over what apps are able to function on the device and ensure only verified apps filter through to the user.

Another interesting point of note in Microsoft’s security updates is the administration protection feature. This is designed to give employees some amount of control over their PCs and the permissions required to run them.

“With administrator protection enabled, if a system change requires administrator rights, the employee is prompted to authorize the change using Windows Hello. Upon approving the change, Windows creates a temporary isolated admin token that is destroyed once the process is completed,” Pavan Davuluri, Corporate Vice President, Windows + Devices, explains.

Multifactor authentication is all the craze right now and Windows Hello is ready to shine here as well. The feature has passkey support for users to access their data easily, without compromising it by mistake. This extended capability of Windows Hello will also come in handy while accessing specific folders that can be encrypted and locked to prevent access until authentication is provided.

There is also the Hotpatch capability with Windows 11 Enterprise 24H2 and Windows 365, which will allow businesses to apply critical security updates without having to restart the system, giving them a chance to respond to a problem swiftly before any damage is done. Fast action that doesn’t require a reboot is always a welcome change.

These security updates for Windows from Ignite 2024 may not be the most exciting for those who want new, fun features to try out, but they may just be the most important aspect of the announcements made by Microsoft this time.

A Microsoft Copilot event has been scheduled for later this month and if you haven’t heard about the goal, it’s expected to be a rebranding moment for Copilot. That sounds confusing, we know, Copilot only just received a comprehensive debut so why would Microsoft rebrand it already?

The upcoming Microsoft 365 Copilot: Wave 2 event will focus on “the next phase of Copilot innovation,” providing us with a review of just how critical AI is going to be within Microsoft’s services. The Microsoft Copilot rebranding is scheduled for September 16, 2024, at 8:00 am PT, and will be hosted on LinkedIn, for everyone who wants to tune in.

Microsoft 365 Copilot Wave 2 Event: Let’s Revisit Copilot for Work

Much like the other AI models out there, Copilot has been marketed as a one-stop solution to all your needs. The all-encompassing AI works as a productivity tool, personal assistant, search engine, unauthorized mentor, creative muse, and keeper of all your secrets. Tech giants are working overtime trying to break down how to market their AI services and convince customers about the full-fledged perks of AI.

The implementation of AI within the work sphere has been one of the most successful strategies for a large number of companies, and the wide variety of Microsoft products are central to corporate life. Considering the scale of its business offerings, the Microsoft 365 Copilot: Wave 2 event and its natural segue into “AI for work” or “Copilot for work” was always inevitable.

Microsoft’s decision to host the event on LinkedIn and their comment on inviting the public to “discover the next phase of Copilot for work” make it obvious that the company is targeting work tools as the focal point of the next stage of its AI plans.

Ready For Some Copilot Updates? Here’s What to Expect

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Corporate VP Jared Spataro are expected to lead the event to show businesses just why they should invest in the new and improved AI for their professional needs. Last month, The Verge was among the first to reveal Microsoft’s plans, indicating how the Microsoft Copilot rebranding was going to take place, shifting the focus from the abstract “Copilot in Word,” to the more focused “Microsoft 365 Copilot in Word.” The Microsoft 365 tools are absolutely integral to any professional setup and despite their many faults, improvements to them are always welcome.

Earlier Copilot updates have already provided a specialized plan for businesses that want to integrate the AI assistant into their processes, but this comes at a price of $30 USD per user per month. Initially, Microsoft had enforced a 300-user minimum for any business that wanted to try the tool, which cut smaller businesses from using the Copilot business service, but they eventually removed the restriction.

The Copilot AI tool offers a lot of support across Microsoft 365 tools such as Word, Excel, and OneNote, allowing users to analyze data, gain summaries of notes, visualize data as a table, create more innovative presentations, etc. The organization’s plans to expand on these features remain to be seen. It is also unclear if the Microsoft Copilot rebranding will involve any new subscription plans or shift off a section of their tasks to a differently named AI tool, but that appears highly unlikely. From what we can tell, the company will use this opportunity to get businesses, their primary target audience, to renew their interest in the Copilot tools.

Reports suggest that the Microsoft Copilot event could feature some additional features announced for Copilot Pro as well, but that might take too much attention away from the business plan the company is trying to push forward. Microsoft has already landed in hot water trying to convince users that the Recall feature on the Copilot+ laptops is a good idea, but its attempts have not been received as magnanimously.

For now, Microsoft has been planning on releasing the feature in stages, ensuring that those who do want to give the feature a chance, get an opportunity to do it. Overall, Microsoft’s past Copilot updates have generated a very mixed bag of reactions, but a more focused pitch at the entrepreneurs and owners may be better received.

The post The Huawei Tri-Fold Phone Is Expected to Make a Grand Debut on Sept. 10 appeared first on Technowize.

]]>
Huawei’s tri-fold smartphone is all set for release on September 10, 2024, and we could not be more excited to witness this category-defining gadget. Folding smartphones have come back in a big way these last few years and while Samsung has the biggest range of offerings, other companies have caught up to the leader with their own take on the folding marvel. Huawei’s 10-inch foldable is all set to be the first of its kind, not just because of the massive size of the book-type fold but because of its tri-fold design.

Such a setup will involve a complicated system of hinges and likely ramp up the fragility of the phone significantly, but for those who don’t mind the risk, Huawei’s foldable phone should be an interesting experiment with technology.

The Huawei Tri-Fold Phone Is All Set for Its September Launch

Huawei turned to the Chinese microblogging platform Weibo to confirm its plans to hold a launch event on September 10 at 2:30 pm ET (11:30 pm PT on September 9), but the company didn’t directly connect the event to the Tri-fold smartphone release. Previous updates from the company had suggested that the foldable smartphone would be released in September, so fans have been quick to link the two news stories together.

Unfortunately for international fans, the Huawei tri-fold phone will be available exclusively in China. Due to security concerns, devices from the brand have been banned in the U.S., so a release in the region is entirely unlikely, but it could become available in other regions in the next few months.

The company hasn’t promoted and advertised its foldable phone very overtly, but observers have been able to pick out evidence of the device and track the Huawei phone leaks diligently to culminate in a sparse few reliable rumors. The former CEO of Huawei, Richard Yu, who maintains his position as the Chairman of Huawei’s Board of Directors of the Consumer BG, was spotted using the wide-screened device a couple of times. The device was said to be similar to the R&D prototype of the tri-fold phone, providing more confirmation that the project was actually coming to fruition.

Huawei is doing quite well for itself in the folding phone market segment. Earlier this year, the company crossed Samsung to take the top position in the category as the company with 35 percent of the foldable smartphone market shares. Motorola and HONOR were also able to make big gains in the charts due to their own foldable offerings.

Huawei foldable phone

Image: HUAWEI’s Mate X5 and other foldable phones have been quite successful.

Huawei Phone Leaks—What Do We Know About The Tri-Fold Phone?

The Huawei tri-fold phone is expected to have two hinges, which will allow the device to unfold into a three-paneled screen. The entire screen is expected to span 10 inches. For comparison, the inner screen on the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold has an 8-inch display while the Samsung Z Fold 6 has an 7.6-inch display.

According to the leaks, the Huawei phone will feature a Kirin 9 series chipset and have some AI features, although we have no insight into what these features could be. From the few hazy images, it appears the device will have the same round and centered camera module on the back panel that we’ve seen in devices like the Huawei Mate X5.

Nothing else is known about the Huawei tri-fold phone but we only have a few days left in our wait to find out more. Conceptually, the device is undoubtedly interesting, but these hinged devices always come with the risk of an easily damaged screen. Foldable phones are much harder to keep safe with a phone cover, and the tri-fold structure will make it twice as hard, especially if the screen covers the outer edge of the device.

Do we really need a 10-inch phone? Considering the multiple additional risks it comes with, it feels like a nice gimmick to show off to friends and family more than anything useful, but we’re not going to stifle innovation with pessimism so early on. It’s good to see Huawei turn such a foldable smartphone concept into reality. It’ll be interesting to see how the general public responds to the device and how the gadget holds up to testing over time.

Huawei’s decision to schedule its event only after Apple’s iPhone 16 product launch is set to take place is also quite daring. Apple is rumored to be working on a foldable smartphone as well, but we’re unlikely to see any evidence of it before 2026, so Huawei has a clear runway to dominate the conversation on foldable smartphones for the next few months.

The company’s AI advances will also get its turn to take a bow on stage.

The post The Invites are Out: Google Pixel 9 Hardware Event in August appeared first on Technowize.

The Google Pixel hardware event has an earlier due date than expected and the reasoning behind the change remains a mystery. Google’s “surprise” Pixel event, the Made By Google conference, usually takes place in October but it is scheduled for August 13 this year. With exciting hardware announcements to look forward to such as the Pixel Watch 3 launch and the Google Pixel 9, we’re not complaining about the advanced release date, however, most companies like to take their time setting up for the launch, so the early release date is surprising.

Is Google trying to get ahead of the competition with early sales or is it worried its device won’t hold up to the flagship releases later in the year? Does the early release have to do with an attempt to get ahead of the leaks or is there something more dire behind the decision? We can only guess at the tech giant’s intentions.

Gear Up, the Google Pixel Hardware Event Is Scheduled for August 13

Google’s August 13 event came to light after the company began sending out invitations for the Made By Google experience. The invite was brief but gave its recipients a hint about what they could hope to see from the event, “You’re invited to an in-person Made by Google event where we’ll showcase the best of Google AI, Android software, and the Pixel portfolio of devices.”

Google’s decision to split its attention between the I/O developers conference and the Made By Google event isn’t surprising. Considering the extensive range of features we saw announced in terms of accessibility and AI integration, Gemini and Project Astra would have overpowered anything it had to say about its next Pixel phone.

The Google Pixel 9 launch in August has been chased by rumors ever since the Pixel 8 made its debut. Every Pixel release is preceded by quite a significant number of leaks that steal the attention away from the actual device well in advance of its release, so perhaps the company wants to get ahead of the game this time with the Google surprise Pixel event.

Where Will We See the Google Pixel Launch in August?

According to the invite, the Google Pixel hardware event will take place on August 13, 10 AM PT, at the Google Headquarters in Mountain View, California. The doors to the event open at AM and after the keynote, attendees will be able to enjoy a hands-on product experience at the invite-only event.

Fans who are unable to attend will be able to experience the keynote speech and product launches via a stream on the company’s official YouTube channel and its Store page. The immediate coverage of the Google August 13 event should also give you enough to go on if you happen to miss the live stream. We’ll have our own assessments of the announcement here once it is done.

What to Look Forward to with the Google Pixel Hardware Event?

The Google “surprise” Pixel event is not much of a surprise to be fair—a one-and-a-half-month heads-up gives users sufficient time to prepare for the launch, but the early event date brings the surprise element if nothing else does.

The contents of the Google August 13 event aren’t expected to be much of a surprise either considering we’ve already heard about the device that could dominate the showcase—the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold. The blossoming fold and flip phone category is growing in unexpected ways, and while the recent Motorola Razr Plus 2024 has made quite a successful debut in the category, a new Google Fold may just arrive to steal its thunder.

If you’re wondering what to expect from the Google Pixel hardware event, here are some of the major talking points.

Pixel 9 Series

The entire focal point of Google’s August 13 event should be the Pixel 9 series of devices. The base model of the series is often the one that sells best due to its more reasonable pricing but we’ll have to see what it has on offer this time—other than Gemini AI.

Pixel 9 Pro

The Pixel series traditionally has one base model and a Pro model. Eventually, the smaller, less powerful A-series makes a debut a few months in, just like the exceptional 8a did before the Google I/O 2024. This time, instead of just one Pro model, the Google Pixel surprise could include an additional XL model.

Pixel 9 Pro Fold or Pixel Fold 2

Google’s first attempt at a Fold phone wasn’t as well-received as the company hoped, but it may be able to turn the tide during round two. Whether the device will continue the Pixel 9 naming plan or the Fold series is still unclear, but we are certain that we’re getting a less chunky device with a more boxy camera, paired with a promise of doing better.

Google surprise Pixel event

Pixel Watch 3

The Pixel Watch 2 was able to hold its ground well enough against the Galaxy Watch 6 and the next version should be even better. The Pixel Watch series dominates the Wear OS category, which is an important demarcation of which watches do well and which don’t, but is it enough to put it above competition? We’ll have to see. The Pixel Watch 3 launch is expected to stick to its familiar round dial but a much-needed battery upgrade may be in the books.

Pixel Buds Pro 2

Many users may have forgotten that the company also makes wireless earbuds, but the Google Pixel series launch in August should serve as a good reminder. The upcoming Pixel Buds Pro 2 is also expected to get a battery boost with better active noise cancellation and support for ultra-wideband for improved Find My Device integration, however, we’ll have to wait till the keynote event to know more.

Gemini Upgrades

During the May 14 event, Google announced quite a versatile list of AI features that weren’t ready for immediate release, for example, their much-talked-about Project Astra. With the Pixel 9 series announcement, a new collection of these AI tools might drop simultaneously, some exclusives reserved for the new hardware lineup and others available with the Android 15 release.

The Google Nest series hasn’t seen a launch or any real updates for quite a while now, whether we’re talking about the Google Nest Audio which was released in October 2020, or the Nest Cam which had an August 2021 release. Even the Google Nest Mini second-gen gadget was released all the way back in 2019. The Google Pixel Tablet saw an upgrade last year so we may not be due for another upgrade just yet, but with so little to go on, the Google Pixel hardware event could encompass just about anything the company has worked on in terms of hardware.

If “Apple Intelligence” made you glance at your old iPhone model and sigh in disappointment, then you might want to comfort yourself with the iOS 18 preview instead. Unlike Apple’s scattered attempts at AI that will be restricted to the premium iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, the iOS 18 updates will arrive on a larger range of smartphones. From iOS 18’s scheduled messages to the customization opportunities, the details of the upgraded version of the software have a lot in store for users, promising to elevate your iPhone experience all at once.

Just like Craig Federighi’s flashy, meme-able entry during the WWDC 2024 event, the Apple iOS 18 launch has our full attention.

iOS 18 features

iOS 18 Preview—All Things iOS at the WWDC 2024

WWDC 2024, or Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference, was held on June 10, 2024, and it brought with it a rush of announcements that fans have patiently and impatiently waited for. The exact date for the Apple iOS 18 launch remains a mystery but reports suggest the developer program is already live and the public Beta version should become available around July. The five previous milestone iOS releases all took place in September so users might have to wait till then for the official iOS 18 launch. This should coincide with the iPhone 16 lineup but the exact date is still unconfirmed.

Instead of leaving us in the dark about what to expect, Apple has given us an iOS 18 preview with a gift basket of features to wait for instead so let’s shuffle things around what it includes.

WWDC 2024

Image: Turn your apps to dark mode or set them to match your wallpaper

iOS 18 Features Bring Customization and Style

To start off the iOS 18 preview, we were handed a glimpse of how the aesthetic details of your Apple home screen are now going to be easier to customize. Just like Android, you now have the freedom to move apps around and place them in a layout that suits you best, arranging the apps for convenience and style. In addition to moving the apps around individually, you can also select an entire row to make it easier to place similar apps together where you want them to go.

If the app rearrangement feels too basic for you, then the iOS 18 update will also allow you to change the app icons to a dark mode. Taking the recoloring one step further, at the touch of a button, you can open up a slider to change the icons to match the color of your background or pick a different shade to make them stand out in contrast. We love personalizing things to fit the mood of the month and the new update throws in a touch of personal style that was previously missing on the iPhone.

The Photo app has also been redesigned to change how you access your photos. The photo grid on top gives you all your images at a glance, with your collections at the bottom, from recent images to your folder of people and pets. You can reorder these collections according to what’s important to you. This is one of Apple’s biggest redesigns of the Photos app and while we’re not particularly moved by it, you might enjoy the detail more than we do.

WWDC 2024

Image: Personalize your Control Center and resize the settings to suit you

The Revamped Control Center Brings Everything Together Perfectly

As rumored, the iOS preview also introduced a revamped control center that you can pack with as many convenient shortcuts and tools as you’d like. Accessing the control center was already easy with just a swipe, but Apple has created room for more controls and settings to be added as you scroll lower into the settings.

Developers who seize the opportunity will be able to use the Controls API to create toggles for their apps and services and feature them in the menu. Not only that, you get to determine which controls sit where and how much of your screen’s real estate they take up depending on their relevance to you.

You may miss out on AI with your older iPhone models but if developers create more segways into their apps this way, you may never feel the absence of an assistant, with every setting easily available to you. There are multiple avenues for customization for developers to explore with the API, so the hope remains that more of them get on board and try it out.

Apple iOS 18 updated

Image: Information from locked apps will not appear in other areas like search and your notifications

Privacy Priorities with the iOS 18 Preview

It’s unbelievable how smartphone makers haven’t prioritized individual app locks for so long considering how important it might be to protect sensitive apps on your device. Now, Apple will allow users to lock up individual apps with barriers that will prevent others from opening up an app that they don’t want anyone to view. Locking apps with Face ID, Touch ID, or Passcodes is going to be much easier than downloading a separate app to do it for you. Data from within the app will not appear in other areas either, which will make it easier to prevent someone from glancing at a private notification or reading a dumb query you had for Siri.

Apple also mentioned that the new iOS 18 privacy feature will allow you to hide apps in a separate folder like you can on Samsung phones already, but we don’t know the full extent of how apps on this hidden folder will operate.

Apple upgrade

Image: Add effects to your texts

iOS 18’s Scheduled Messages to Make Life Easier For You

If you’re a terrible friend who sets all the reminders to wish your friend a happy birthday and still forgets to say it on time, you can schedule messages to be sent out in advance. Don’t want your parents to know you were up at 3 am but still need to remind them you have plans tomorrow? You can now use iOS 18’s scheduled messages to send the text out in the morning. iOS 18 is also improving the range of emojis you can use via messaging Tapbacks and text formatting to underline or italicize specific segments of your text are now easier.

If you want to give your message some more personality, you can also use the new text effects to add some visual effect to your messages. This is an interesting feature that we’ll probably tire of using after the first few days, but it is still a fun way to spice things up in the group chat.

iOS 18 launch

iOS 18 Previews “Messaging via Satellite”

Apple’s iOS 18 launch was scheduled to bring RCS support, which it finally did, but the company chose to emphasize its feature of messaging via satellite on iPhones 14 and above. If you are in an area without cell service or Wi-Fi, it is usually very difficult to get in touch with people, however, this feature will allow you to use iMessage and SMS to still communicate and send texts, emojis, and Tapbacks. Only the iMessages that are sent this way will be end-to-end encrypted, so there is still some disadvantage in communicating with Android via SMS. Regardless, improved connectivity is always good to see in any device.

iOS 18 launch maps

Apple Maps Gets More Detailed With iOS 18 but It Isn’t the Only App Upgrade

One of the more interesting announcements during the iOS 18 preview is the inclusion of topographical maps with detailed trail networks including all 63 of the U.S. national parks. These can be saved on your phone so you have a much easier time with your hike without any fear of getting lost. If you have your own personal trails to save for later, you can do that too. It’s a pretty nifty upgrade for those outdoorsy folk who make the most of their weekends becoming one with nature.

Apple Wallet will now have tap to cash to make transactions easier and event tickets are being redesigned to make it easier to find all the relevant information at a glance. Your email inbox is set to receive better categorizations later this year and you won’t even need AI summaries to make the most of all the information related to a particular business or company’s email chain.

Want to get into journaling to improve your state of mind? Apple is set to make that experience easier for you, with detailed insights into your writing journey as you master your own mind. These little app upgrades add to the bigger picture quite nicely.

iOS 18 launches gaming

Game Mode Is Coming to iPhone with the iOS 18 Updates

For gamers who prefer to buy a gaming phone instead of going over budget on an iPhone, you might soon see more value with the iOS device. The Apple iOS 18 launch will bring a game mode that restricts background activity on your smartphone to improve frame rates and responsiveness with your connected accessories. It’s not as groundbreaking as Apple made it sound, but it’s better than nothing for gamers who want to make the switch.

The iOS 18 preview has been well worth the wait and every element feels well planned and carefully designed. Does it do enough to take away the bitterness of being left behind from experiencing Apple’s AI features? Perhaps not if you enjoy experimenting with AI. But if you’re not someone who cares too much about Siri and AI technology, you most likely will not feel the absence of Apple Intelligence with the iOS 18 updates

The Apple WWDC AI updates have landed and the company finally appears on track to catch up with its top competitors. Calling the Apple AI innovations “Apple Intelligence,” the company has announced a slew of features that unfortunately won’t even benefit all of its existing users—more on that later. The company also formally confirmed its collaboration with ChatGPT, a fact that has Elon Musk losing his cool and threatening to ban Apple devices at his company, claiming it would be a “security violation.” The unexpected rage aside, most of Apple’s WWDC 2024 AI news has been positively received by the company’s actual target audience.

Apple WWDC AI Updates—Presenting “Apple Intelligence”

Apple Intelligence is a pretty cheesy name for the expansive potential of what the company is trying to do with AI, but some still question whether the company is fully exploring the resources they have. Musk and the others who are scoffing at the decision to partner with OpenAI do have a point—why, despite the evidence of successful AI research of their own in the past, has the company not been able to build its artificial intelligence up on its own to where it is truly Apple’s Intelligence?

What Musk’s outburst is missing is that not all of Apple’s AI innovations appear to be powered by ChatGPT, nor does it seem to integrate it on a software level where every AI element requires outside help. Apple does not make it very clear just how much of it is its own intelligence considering even systemwide writing tools do rely on ChatGPT for content generation, but it appears that is the majority of the chatbot’s integration—in generating content on different platforms when prompted.

To Apple’s credit, instead of shying away from the fact, the company openly acknowledged that it needed help with keeping pace with competitors. The decision to sign a deal with OpenAI to incorporate elements of ChatGPT must have been a hard one, but instead of putting off Siri’s generative AI improvements any longer, the company has leaped into whatever is possible with the level of AI they have access to today, which is evident from the Apple WWDC AI updates.

Apple AI innovation

First and Most Importantly, Siri Updates from WWDC

The collaboration with OpenAI is only one part of the company’s game plan, but it has generated the most conversation from Apple; ‘s WWDC AI updates. With a plan to allow Siri to “tap into external models,” Siri will ask users if they want to share their questions with ChatGPT. Without having to pay for an additional subscription or create another GPT account, users can opt in to using the ML prowess that OpenAI has been developing these last few years. The Siri AI improvements are not making Siri inherently smarter as of now, borrowing some brain power from existing AI models, the list of which is expected to increase over time.

According to the Siri updates from WWDC, the integration will come later this year to iOS 18, macOS, and iPadOS 18, so you should be able to benefit from it regardless of which device category you’re more familiar with. If you’re wondering what else the assistant can do, you’ll be glad to know the improved answering capabilities aren’t the only improvements coming to Siri.

Siri Gains Improved Integrations

According to the Apple WWDC AI updates, Siri is going to be better integrated into the system and its many tools more efficiently. Siri can be used to text better with improved prompts or share resources, like an Apple News story, more easily with your contacts. Siri will also become better at scanning your device and looking for relevant information that you need pulled up, integrating with third-party apps much more efficiently. The Siri updates from WWDC mention “onscreen awareness,” which means the assistant will soon be able to interpret the context of your request more proficiently.

And if you like some visual details, a new glowing light around your screen will signal Siri’s activation which is a fun little addition to Siri that doesn’t have to do with AI.

Apples Intelligence

Language Skill Boosts—Apple WWDC AI Updates

Similar to all the “suggested reply” features in emails and changing the tone of a message, features we’ve seen from Microsoft and other tech giants, Apple Intelligence will make life easier when it comes to writing. Available across both system and third-party apps, you should have an easier time drafting a cover letter or replying to business emails, proofreading the content, and rewording ensuring it conveys your sentiments perfectly. The summarize feature should make it easier to parse through your inbox and determine what requires your attention.

The mail inbox should be better at organizing your emails according to priority, putting what’s important on top. Similarly, Apple device notifications will also be organized better to show you what you need to see first, summarizing your information to give you quick updates at a glance. Need your lecture notes summarized or require your contractor’s elaborate explanatory call condensed into a note you can share with your partner? Your notes app will help with summaries and so will your recorded calls, neatly transcribed into a call briefing for you to refer to later. These Apple AI innovations focus heavily on the “little things.”

Siri AI improvements

Image Generation With Apple

If there’s one thing that the popularity of AI image generations and personalized avatars has taught us, it’s that people love spending time creating images without actually having to pick up a pencil. Announced with the Apple WWDC AI updates, the Image Playground will allow users to create images in three distinct styles: animation, illustration, or sketch. Apart from having a dedicated app for this, the tool will be included within apps as well, so you can create and ship off an image promptly mid-conversation. Adding diagrams to your notes has never been easier.

Not only will you be able to generate images, but you can also use images of your loved ones to customize them into a new art piece. Now we are a little wary of just how this will be used but we’re sure the company has thought ahead to put some checks into place to prevent misuse.

The image generation capabilities have also been extended to the creation of emojis. You can create an emoji of a friend and with a few quick prompts, you can just as easily generate a new emoji to suit the tone of your conversation with a friend. Never again will you have to complain about the wrong emojis being introduced to iOS when you can just create what you want.

From Image Search to Making Memories, Everything is Easier with the Apple AI Innovations

The Apple WWDC AI updates also include improved image editing and an image search feature that will sift through your gallery to find images that match the prompt you provide. Similarly, you can also create a memory movie through the advanced understanding showcased by the AI, submitting a prompt and allowing the tool to create a collage of memories, paired with appropriate music suggestions.

Siri’s AI improvements and all of the other Apple WWDC 2024 AI news sound exciting to some and boring to others, but there’s one major issue here. A lot of the Apple Intelligence elements require on-device support and that is available only with the most recent devices.

According to Apple, “Some features, software platforms, and additional languages will come over the course of the next year. Apple Intelligence will be available on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPad and Mac with M1 and later, with Siri and device language set to U.S. English.” Users of older iPhones may not benefit from these Apple WWDC AI updates in any significant way, which is perhaps the biggest caveat about all the recent updates. Were you excited to try Apple Intelligence out? That’s just too bad because the features may be free but you need to invest in an iPhone 15 Pro first to try it out.

The focus on artificial intelligence was obvious in the months leading up to the event, but the Google I/O 2024 announcements have sealed the deal on AI-guided workplace productivity. Most of the Google I/O AI updates revolve around Google Gemini and its sibling AI tools, along with a hint at VR glasses that they didn’t dive into. Google’s assistive search features, futuristic voice assistant Astra, quick search tools, smarter Google Workspace, and other elements of Google’s AI 2024 initiatives have opened the doors to what could be a new era of workplace improvements that we didn’t see coming.

Of course, if you only want to use these features to assist your kids with homework or fix a broken gadget that’s been lying in the garage for weeks, then many of the Google I/O AI updates will cater to your needs without a hitch. Whatever you need done, the new tools can simplify your daily experience, so you can focus on what’s important to you.

The Google I/O 2024 Announcements Hint at a New Era of Work

TechRadar tells us that Google used the word “AI” in their keynote about 121 times within the 1 hour and 52 minutes of the live event. Perhaps they wanted to make sure you knew what the company was all about in 2024, with no qualms about emphasizing that they were set on leading the industry with AI.

With the intention of “making AI helpful for everyone,” the most groundbreaking aspect of the Google I/O 2024 highlights was easily the launch of project Astra, which everyone has now associated with Scarlett Johansson’s magical rendition of an always-there assistant in the movie Her. There’s no sign that Joaquin Phoenix will turn up when you use the AI, but its ability to understand and respond to your environment should make a lot of on-the-job experiences breeze by faster.

Google IO 2024 highlights

1. Google I/O 2024 Announcements Introduce Project Asta—A Virtual Assistant Who Could Change the Way You Work

Google Deepmind’s vision for the future of AI assistants is futuristic, to say the least. The Asta segment of the Google AI 2024 updates starts off simple, with a tour around the office as the phone is shown different objects lying around the office and asked to identify and describe some of them. The assistant provides a clear explanation and it’s enough to get us clapping but it’s nothing we haven’t seen before. When the phone is turned to a segment of code displayed on a laptop, the AI assistant is quickly able to summarize the purpose of the code without hesitation.

When paired with a set of VR glasses that Google snuck into the showcase without comment, you would no longer have to walk around with your phone held up to show your assistant what you’re looking at. The glasses can do the looking and the speaking as you go about your day and ask it to resolve problems on a whiteboard for you. Imagine if hours of work breaking down a complex problem or a glitchy piece of code could be cut down with quick solutions via AI. Project Asta could help address issues at work faster than ever before, freeing you up to implement a solution instead of discovering it.

Even without the Project Astra incorporation, you can instead record a video of a problem and ask a question along with it. Upload the video to Google and you should have search results identifying and responding to your query. OpenAI’s ChatGPT-4o model has also received some human-like conversational updates but the Google Astra update promises a more collaborative, intuitive experience at work. The quick response systems provided by the Google I/O AI updates are going to be very easy to get used to.

Google Search feature IO 2024

2. AI Overviews

Launching in the U.S. to all users with a timeline of expanding to other countries soon, the AI Overview feature is one that has been around for a while. If you have signed up for the Google Labs testing experience, you should have received the Google generative search experience already, where every search query provides users with a quick summary of the most popular articles and a response to the question on their mind. This start to the Google I/O 2024 announcements is perhaps not as showy as the rest, but it is a quick way to have your question answered when you don’t have to read through an assortment of long, rambling articles that refuse to get to the point.

Need to know why your browser has slowed down or how to password-protect your PDF? The AI Overviews should give you a heads-up on what’s going on and what you need to do next. It’s a handy repairman to have around when going to the more tech-savvy experts at work is too embarrassing.

3. Bringing Back the NotebookLM With the Google’s I/O 2024 Highlights

Powered by Google’s Gemini LLM, the NotebookLM tool introduced at the Google I/O conference last year has not been discussed as much as it should. Designed for students who are researchers who generally have a lot of material to review almost all the time, the tool is capable of generating study guides, quizzes, and FAQs from the material fed into the system. Its audio overview feature generates a realistic, conversational summary of the information provided by the tool, to simplify learning for a listener unfamiliar with the material.

The Google I/O 2024 announcements included a demo of an audio summary of Isaac Newton’s three laws of motion, with two speakers and a transcript on screen to make it that much easier to pay attention to. The multimodal feature allows you to join the conversation and ask a question at the touch of a button, redirecting the conversation to help you understand better. The result? A realistic shift in the conversation to incorporate the question naturally and give you an answer that broadens your understanding of the subject. Where was this tool when I was crying ugly tears into my physics textbooks back in high school because I was too scared to ask questions in class?

Students who use the new and improved NotebookLM should greatly benefit from the simplification of material, but Google I/O AI updates could just as easily be integrated into a work setup. Imagine using these AI tools to onboard a new employee who needs to be brought up to date on the company’s policies, or consolidating project notes to be shared with a team. Creating training material as takeaways from workshops or drafting a business proposal from folders of material has never been easier. Multimodal tools are among the best ways to absorb information in a way that suits the user and the Google I/O 2024 announcements and organizations that understand that will be the first to benefit from it.

Google AI 2024

Image: Using the Gemini AI app on Android

4, Android Is Set to Incorporate Some of the Gemini Magic According to the Google I/O Event Summary

The Google AI Gemini has already been introduced to many Android devices, but soon enough Gemini Nano will arrive on upcoming Pixel devices to make accessing the tool easier for you. Even within the in-built AI, accessing Gemini is not difficult considering its feature can be enabled on many Android phones.

The Circle-to-Search feature can already help with picking up a part of an image to look up results relevant to you. This also extends to text search, when complex terms or mathematical formulas can be circled to make it easier and quicker to pick up text and find an explanation that makes sense to you. Instead of the cumbersome process of typing it all out into your browser, you will now have a way to understand documents and messages and respond to those waiting for a reply. It’s a handy way to ensure there are no more ignored work emails sitting in your inbox.

The Gemini app on Android makes it so you never have to leave the app you’re currently on, even if you want to generate an image or look up something before you respond. Pitching a marketing campaign idea to a colleague and want to instantly generate some ideas to visualize what you’re talking about? Need to ask a PDF a question without having to read through the whole document? Gemini Advanced is right there to help. There are so many ways to employ the contents of the Google I/O 2024 announcements into productivity tools that fit into the palm of your hand.

5. Gemini For Workspace Also Among the Google AI 2024 Announcements

The Google AI 2024 developments have enabled many users to write and generate content relevant to them, but the Gemini side panel will be generally available next month. The panel brings up some helpful options of how you might want to track the information presented to you via your Gmail account, from suggesting replies to tracking the data such as a mail about your receipts. The Gemini assistant can help you track your receipts by adding them to a folder or even creating a spreadsheet with the data available.

For freelancers and business owners, a tool like this drastically reduces the workload that stacks up when they have to track these documents themselves. You could even go so far as to automate the process so future emails are also given the same treatment, cutting down the time you spend on these manual tasks. The side panel integrated into the spreadsheet gives you even more control over the data, offering helpful graphics to put your expenses and earnings into perspective at a glance. Working with extensive data can simplify life like never before. The Data QandA feature will become available in Workplace Labs in September.

Gemini 1.5 Pro will also allow you to pull up a card and general a summary of your email threads, and search for data online without distracting you away from the mail sitting in front of you. The suggestive replies from Gemini will help respond to the email more quickly, not one word at a time like Gmail already does, but an entire reply that can convey your interest or lack thereof. It picks up on context cues to understand how you might want to reply to your email.

Google I/O AI Updates Know That Work Comes First Sometimes

The Gemini-powered virtual teammate that should arrive in 2025 is a much-awaited feature that will let you add a coworker to your project who is specifically created to handle tasks that require specific attention. You’ll be able to create a description for the assistant and chart out their responsibilities, and soon enough, the virtual coworker will start chiming in when they make observations and complete tasks relevant to your team. Name the teammate, give it a job, and watch it work with a single-minded focus that you might even come to envy.

These Google I/O 2024 highlights are a small part of the company’s large plans to bring artificial intelligence to its users and depending on how you incorporate them, you should find your work life and productivity reaching new heights with a few prompts to get you there. Google’s plans have a variety of applications but we can see how we’re going to be using them to simplify day-to-day tasks that don’t deserve the time we currently spend on doing them.

If you were looking for a reason to be disappointed, then we’d like to inform you that BlizzCon 2024 has been canceled. In a post on its website, Blizzard announced that after careful consideration, they had come to the decision that canceling the event was the best course of action for the company. Thankfully, the decision isn’t a permanent one and the Blizzard event cancellation should be a temporary issue until things fall into place for them in upcoming years. While the company chalked out some of its plans for the year and how it plans to move forward, no clear explanation for BlizzCon 2024’s cancellation was provided.

It’s not hard to guess at some of the reasons behind the decision, with the major layoffs earlier this year probably having played a role in the decision.

BlizzCon 2024 update

BlizzCon 2024 Canceled—Put Your Cosplays Away Everyone

Gamers who have been waiting for a BlizzCon 2024 update were left disappointed when the annual fan convention was canceled all while they’d been eagerly waiting for a fixed date for the event. The convention was first held in October 2005 and soon turned into an annual celebration with the exception of a few years in between when it had to be put on hold due to various circumstances. The COVID-19 pandemic interrupted our lives in many ways, and the cancellation of BlizzCon was inevitable given the conditions that ruled us back then. When it attempted to come back in 2022, the company had other legal battles to confront, leading to another shutdown. The convention eventually came back in 2023 to great fanfare but it seems it’ll have to be put to rest for another year.

The BlizzCon convention provided a great opportunity for cosplayers to bring out their best builds and gamers were allowed to try their hand at various releases for the first time. The main attractions were always the big announcements by the gaming studio, but the community elements of the convention acted as the main crowd-pullers, giving thousands of fans something to look forward to.

Possible Reasons for the Blizzard Event Cancellation

One of the reasons BlizzCon 2024 has been canceled likely has to do with the fact that there was a massive round of layoffs earlier this year. Activision Blizzard was acquired by Microsoft in 2023, in a $68.7 billion deal. Microsoft then laid off 1900 Activision Blizzard and Xbox employees in January 2024, which was a huge blow to the gaming industry as a whole. The game developer company must still have a lot of rearranging and balancing to do considering it’s only been a few months since the big move. At a time like this, organizing the convention probably falls a little lower on their priority list.

Another reason that has been highlighted for getting BlizzCon 2024 canceled is that the company has very little to report in terms of big gaming news from its studios. While it does have two major releases planned for this year, both will take place much before the convention. The World of Warcraft: The War Within expansion is scheduled for summer this year. The Vessel of Hatred expansion for Diablo 4 is also slated for release in 2024, but again, this should happen before the convention and doesn’t provide enough material to carry the entire production of the event on its back.

Blizzard had a survival game, Odyssey, in the works, but that was canceled and the team that had spent all their energy working on it was also let go during the layoff. This leaves Overwatch 2 and Hearthstone, but it doesn’t seem reasonable to arrange the entire convention around them right about now. Considering this was meant to be Warcraft’s 30th anniversary and World of Warcraft’s 20th anniversary, many had expected Blizzard to go all out for the celebrations but it appears we’ll have to reserve the energy for a few smaller events acknowledging the big day.

What’s Next For Blizzard

Alongside the announcement of the canceled BlizzCon 2024 event, the company revealed that not all hope was lost for those still excited about the announcements this year. “To celebrate these upcoming releases and to bring our communities together in new and special ways, we will soon share some exciting plans for other industry trade shows and conventions like Gamescom,” said Blizzard in its BlizzCon 2024 update. The company also made a note of the Overwatch Champions Series at two upcoming gaming events—Dreamhack Dallas, starting on May 31, and Dreamhack Stockholm, which will begin on November 22.

Blizzard also alluded to the 30th anniversary of Warcraft, stating that there would be multiple in-person events organized as well as in-game events for those who aren’t able to make it to the celebrations.

All in all, Blizzard isn’t planning on sitting still and mourning the cancellation of BlizzCon. Instead, the company is going to channel its resources into more manageable smaller-scale events, so fans should still have a chance to celebrate their favorite games one way or another.

]]>
Just as one tech event ends, another immediately looms on the horizon, and this time we have the Google I/O 2024 announcements fast approaching. The Google I/O 2024 date was announced three days ago, and the developer conference is officially scheduled for May 14, 2024. This is close enough to keep us guessing at the possibilities while still giving us enough time for a few more rumors to leak and keep us invested. Regardless of whether you like what Google has to offer tech businesses that have their fingers in many pies tend to shift the course of the market in unpredictable ways. For this reason, the Google I/O 2024 Android updates and product releases could set the stage for upcoming tech launches as well.

One of the expected Google I/O 2024 Android updates is the unveiling of Android 15. The I/O event is traditionally used to launch upgraded versions of their software among other things, so we could see the company follow suit this year as well. The Android 15 update will be important for Pixel customers no doubt, but it will inevitably make a big difference to other smartphone users too. The Android system forms the basis for a large majority of smartphone brands so all future smartphones will then have to ship with compatibility to the latest OS in order to stay relevant.

Google I/O 2024 Announcements For Android 15

The Google I/O 2024 announcement for Android 15 will be followed by a developer-focused release, and there will be a few months of delay before the public gets to experience it themselves in Beta mode. For example, the Samsung One UI 7.0 update will hinge on the changes in Android 15, and there will be a chain of updates that will follow Google’s upgrades. So if the Google I/O 2024 Android updates see a late Q3 debut, then Samsung’s One UI 7.0 in beta will be available in Q4.

What are some of the Google I/O 2024 expectations regarding the Android 15 features? We know it’s called Vanilla Ice Cream and the logo has a newly redesigned space theme. The predictions include better camera compatibility for third-party apps, support for virtual MIDI 2.0 devices, better health information management on a single platform, and improved battery life and overall performance of the device. According to Android Police, we will see lock screen widgets make a comeback and you might even be able to save app pairs for those that you frequently need to open together. This could be a very simple but significant addition to the Android interface.

If you appreciate your privacy, you might like the inclusion of a “Private Space” feature, much like the Secure Folder on Samsung devices. Bluetooth LE Audio standard support might finally be available for a better connection to your wireless earphones. Security features and advanced Play Protect phishing prevention are other expectations of the Google I/O 2024 Android right now.

Google I/O 2024: Rumored Products

For lovers of the mid-range tier of devices that don’t cost a kidney, the Google I/O 2024 announcements will certainly have something worthwhile for you. The Pixel 8a is rumored to be one of the product launches slated for the upcoming event. It will come equipped with the Google Tensor G3 chipset and there could be slight redesigns in terms of size and a shift away from sharp corners. Early renders from the likes of SmartPrix show that the camera layout and overall structure will remain largely untouched.

Analysts and leakers have hypothesized that the Google I/O 2024 announcements could also include a brief glimpse of the Google Pixel Fold 2. The initial renders we’ve seen of the device are a little unusual, however, with increased specs comes increased appreciation so we’re looking forward to learning more about the device’s capabilities. The Google I/O 2024 details could include a heavy focus on AI. Google’s Gemini AI and its younger sibling, Gemma, will get some time in the limelight so the company can try to redeem itself after recent controversies over the faltering ability of its AI. The recently discussed SIMA gaming AI by Google’s DeepMind should also get a shoutout at the least.

There is no news on the launch of an updated tablet or smartwatch so far, but it might be too soon to tell what Google has planned for either device. 9to5Google did find some citrus-themed hardware codenames, Clementine and Kiyomi, which could allude to an upcoming tablet launch but that’s all we have in terms of rumors. If Google is planning on launching a sequel to the Pixel Watch 2, we’re more likely to see it released in October—we may not hear too much about it during the Google I/O 2024 announcements this time.

For a Google I/O 2024 date reminder, you can sign up for the online developers conference on the website. The in-person event will take place in the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, CA, but there are only a limited number of guests who get invited to attend the event directly. You can also go try out the fun little puzzle the company put out on the website along with the announcement, just in case you’re getting bored of twiddling your thumbs while you wait.

Recapping the best of the MWC 2024 conference is no small feat considering the range of larger-than-life devices we saw showcased this year. The smartphones were some of the biggest eye grabbers of course, but AI wearables were a category that expanded in multiple interesting directions. From making us redo our Humane AI Pin review to tempting us with the Tecno Robotic dog that is as advanced as we need robots to get right now, there was a lot going on at the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona. Even Google decided to pause its product launch in favor of announcing updates to its Gemini AI chatbot, a valiant effort after it spent the last few days fending off controversies over inaccuracy.

Augmented reality was another trend at the event and there was no dearth of troopers bringing in their own visually delightful offerings. The Oppo Air Glass 3 prototype was uniquely simplistic in its ambition to unite XR tech with AI, and HTC VIVE didn’t hold back on providing a whole ecosystem of possibilities with their technology. XPANCEO said hold my headset and took their ideas even further, with four contact lens prototypes, one of which could potentially bring XR straight to your eyes. The ideas remain in a piecemeal state considering the varying prototypes, but they’re clearly onto something groundbreaking.

Best of MWC 2024—Out Top 5 Picks from the Mobile World Congress Event

It feels awfully limiting to pick just five launches to mark the best of the MWC 2024 event considering that each brand had something innovative to offer up, but we’re going to try to narrow down our list and focus on why each one stood out to us this time around.

Lenovo Transparent Laptop

The Lenovo Transparent Laptop

Despite its limitations, the prototype of the Lenovo transparent laptop was a stunning display of technology that showcased how we were far from meeting the limits of what we can do with a computer. The transparent screen paired with the stylus compatibility could make for a useful device for many professionals in different spaces. If it were ever officially released, we’re certain that users would pick up the device, if just for the novelty of owning a see-through laptop. Titled “Project Crystal,” it showcased Lenovo’s own innovation and paired with Azumo’s Nano-Thin Film Illumination (Nano-TFI) technology, it also showed us the power of collaboration. While the transparent display is cool, the ability to use the projected keyboard might just be the most noteworthy part of this technology.

The issues with clarity, privacy, and the overall delicacy of the device do make it difficult to imagine that the device could ever see a public release, however, the Lenovo transparent laptop does pull at your imagination in terms of what you could expect the future to look like. It stood out very easily as among the best at MWC 2024.

Samsung Ring

The Samsung Ring

Another device that basked in the spotlight at the tech event was the Samsung Ring. The company has been teasing the device since the Galaxy Unpacked event in January, and it continues to playfully bat away making any commitments on what exactly we can expect around the Samsung Ring. Despite the lack of details, Samsung is quite a reliable brand when it comes to health tracking and it’s very likely that their smart ring will be a compact but reliable addition to the AI wearables category if they incorporate their AI pursuits here as well.

Samsung displayed its sleek rings during the MWC and its three simplistic colors and clean design were quite appealing. More than celebrating the ring itself, we seem to feel greater enthusiasm for what it means for the smart wearables industry. Big mainstream players like Google and Apple have kept away from devising their own products so far, but rumors indicated that the Samsung Ring has pushed Apple to speed up its work on a smart ring of its own. Chinese brand Honor also announced that it had its own ring in the works, so we’re hoping to see smart rings really take off by 2025, with a greater selection of design and detail in tow.

Tecno Pocket Go

Tecno Pocket Go

We’d be making a big mistake leaving out the gaming category of devices while recollecting the best of the MWC 2024 gathering. Tecno made sure you would remember its name, making a couple of different announcements. The Tecno Pocket Go was one of the most interesting next steps for handheld gaming, taking a screen-free console and finishing the viewing experience with AR glasses. The device comes built with an AMD Ryzen 8840HS chipset and 16GB RAM with 1TB storage. The console itself is a powerhouse but the Pocket Vision AR glasses are what seal the deal, promising a portable AR gaming experience wherever you go.

Apart from the Tecno Pocket Go, we also saw the Tecno Robotic dog which they market as a little companion to keep by your side. The robotic dog doesn’t seem to do too much other than move around and listen to some basic instructions, but that’s quite alright for now. We don’t think we need a realistic mechanical pet just yet. The Robo dog doesn’t seem ready for a release but we could see the Tecno Pocket Go launch sooner rather than later.

Infinix Colour Changing Phone

Infinix Colour Changing Phone

Who doesn’t love customizability? While other brands give you a few options of phone colors to choose from, the prototype of the Infinix color-changing phone offers the ability to change the color of the entire back panel along a pre-specified pattern whenever you want. While color may be a small detail to some, the technology that appears to have gone into designing the device is quite unique and promises to have a very novel effect on how we perceive smartphones in the future.

Asus with its lights on the rear end of its ROG phones and Nothing Phones with the patterned glyphs on the back of the device are just some of the many ways we’re seeing tech expand to the device as a whole rather than just the resolution of your front screen. In continuation of this tech, the Infinix color-changing phone seems like the obvious next step for the evolution of a smartphone.

Xiaomi 14 Ultra

Xiaomi 14 Ultra

Not one to be intimidated by the flagship phones of other major smartphone players, Xiaomi appears to have its eyes set on making a mark internationally. The Xiaomi 14 Ultra secured an international release and seeing the innovation being this “camera phone” we’re quite certain it should perform well. With its Leica partnership and its Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, the phone promises to live up to every expectation you could have of a smartphone right now. It looks great, feels great, and most importantly, works quite well too.

Not to box itself into one department, the company also marketed its Xiaomi SU7 EV during the event and the fast-moving car seems like a dream.

While these are our top picks for the best of MWC 2024, there has to be a special mention made of the Samsung and Motorola bending phones—smartphones that go beyond the very basic idea we have of these devices. We can’t possibly fathom why we would want to risk breaking our already delicate smartphones by testing their flexibility, but as a concept, it is one we can’t stop talking about. And now that we are done talking about all the releases like the Samsung ring, the Tecno Pocket Go and all the other announcements, it’s time to sit around and hope for a release.
